Comparison Between Malaysia and Singapore Consumers in Retailing

Malaysia and Singapore are a multi racial country that has almost everything in the same way. But there's always something different in our managing system. There are always good and bad things about a country but how good and bad are they? There are few topics that we will discuss and compare the differences in retailing field between Malaysia and our beloved neighbour country Singapore.

All of us love shopping don't we?But did any of you think about our environment when we did our shopping or groceries at either hypermarket or mini market? Singapore has done a good job in building up a nation that cares about their environment or being eco-firendly. Singaporeans will go shopping with their own bag or we called it the green bag. It saves more money and most importantly it doesn't effect the global warming. While we Malaysians, being the ignorant ones, contributes a lot to global warming. Although there's a campaign launched by Aeon Company (or better known as Jusco) to protect our environment by bringing the green bag for shopping on every 25th of each month, this campaign doesn't seems to be successful as we did not care about it.

When it comes to shopping, almost all the girls will go crazy about it. Shopping is a way to relax and release tension. Singaporeans and Malaysians have different preferable place to chill. Singaporean prefer to shop at places that are air-conditioned and comfortable as the hot weather are unbearable at times. Malaysian are more easy going kind of people. Weather is not a big issue as long as there are good food or bargains available. Night markets are so famous in Malaysia that you can find it in almost every states here. Example of famous night market are Petaling Streets and the Cheras night market which happens to be the longest night market in Malaysia.

When it comes to the sex topic, most people will say it as a very sensitive thing to talk about and will try to avoid it. What's more if an adult shops are open in a shopping mall? Adults shops can be easily found in Singapore and rarely found in Malaysia. It is because Singaporean are more open minded when it comes to the sex topic while Malaysian find it hard to accept it. There are actually no right or wrong but we prefer the Malaysia style. Youngsters in Singapore are more exposed to this so it can go wrong at some time. While Malaysia being the conservative country, it's good to protect our young generation from sex products as it may lead to bad consequences.

Nowadays more and more Singaporeans are using branded goods when they are out for shopping or even at work. It has become part of their life style. Branded goods are easily found at any location in Singapore, for example the most popular shopping paradise, Orchard Road. Most of them prefer to go there to shop because there are variety of choices to choice from and most of the branded shops like Louis Vuitton (LV), Prada, Gucci and a lot more. Meanwhile in Malaysia, you can only find branded shops in the main city, Kuala Lumpur. It is inconvenient to most of the shoppers and that is why some Malaysian tends to use pirated stuff such as LV's handbag or Gucci's wallet which are easily get just anywhere. On the other hand, Malaysian rather spend money on necessary products than buying branded stuff. Although it is illegal to use imitation goods, still there are many people using it as it is a lot cheaper than the real ones and the main reason is because most people are brand-conscious.

Money is the unit that we use to trade goods in our daily life. So, the price of the goods are important to all the consumers. We found that Singaporean are more focused in the quality, eventhough the price of the product are very high. They're willing to spend money on branded bags, watches or even a luxurious car just to satisfied their compelling desire. In fact, these are mostly inessential luxuries. Directly opposite, Malaysian are more unsentimental approach to life. Most of them are not willing to spend the money on luxurious goods. Malaysian are more money-minded as they focused more on the price and quality. They prefer to use the money to do investment such as buying shares to earn profits, rather than buying unnnecessary branded stuff.

We have discuss on so many differences between Malaysian and Singapore in retailing. In conclusion, there's no right or wrong in this but it's the way we look at it. So what is your opinion? Drop us a comment to tell us about it!
